The Young Marx and Appropriation

Abstract
Based on Marx’s works from 1844, I aim to clarify here the relationships of appropriation between human beings and the objects of their production, especially those he called “authentic”. I spell out the content of fundamental notions such as Entäußerung and Entfremdung, and articulate their content with central aspects of Marx’s conception of action, his philosophical anthropology, and his critique of Hegel. Finally, I contrast my elaborations on appropriation from Marx’s perspective with what Rahel Jaeggi has written on the subject.
