Abstract

In his reply to Guillermo Hurtado's critical note on Culpabilidad y resistencia, Martiarena explains that the basic aim of his research is to study some of the ways in which Mexican indians became "objects" to be known by Spanish priests. In particular, Maniarena claims that his book intends to show how, through the practice of sacramental confession, indians were objectified and hence recognized by the priests as guilty and resistant to the practice of confession. Martiarena also answers to some other questions raised by Hurtado regarding the use of the notion of autonomy inCulpabilidad y resistencia.
